Anybody played these ?
I came across a PC compatible port that supports LAN & Internet multiplayer, is designed to be original as possible, right down to some of the bugs,

All you need are some of the WAD files, plus a few custom iWADs ( i got tons of these ).

So i plan to setup a server, quite possibly 24/7.

It will be a private server, that means only people with the IP & port will be able to play.

You may or may not be required to portforward the port ONLY IF YOU WANNA RUN A SERVER.
( not required to join a server game as a client )

I'll set it up to start the game when the first player joins so people can test it out ( i may or may not enable MONSTERS for deathmatchs :P

I'll update here with all the need info and links to the program and extras.

i haven't played the multiplayer, just the single player because i played it somewhat recently, i was really good.
i am really confused that even though the game is so old, the shooting is still so satisfying.

i've heard people used to play doom multiplayer before stuff like quake came, but i never got the chance myself.

i would love to play it.

Yeah, doom was the game before Quake.

Doom  only supported 4 players via  IPX ( for local network multi-player) games
and dial-up.  

Both worked, but the internet was still in its infancy and i believe the popular on-line services were Genie and Compuserve.

Doom & Doom2(DoomII) set the standard for on-line multi-player shoot'm-ups, they were follow by heretic & Hexen & a couple others, using the same doom engine.

Then Quake followed by QuakeII came out.

Dooms 4 player network popularity even saw some employees, setting up servers on company equipment for break & lunch time Frag-Fests, which lead to some companies banning doom servers because of "network lag issues" for other working employees.
( This was all back in the 1990's, we're talking almost 30 years ago.. when networking worked, but lacked the capacity & speeds of today's systems )

These new ports of the doom engine have been upgraded to fully support internet and server/master-server/client gaming, as well as single player and custom wad files too. ( a WAD file is the game content file)

( I used to wonder why 3drad didn't have a master server option. it does, but requires us to set it up for our selves.
A master server in 3drad is just a separate project running in server mode, that we connect to as a client first to pass on our server details for listing.
A client project can connect to this master server first to see a list of available public server projects to connect too ).

I have i think, 40 to 60 custom WAD files i've collected, a lot are pretty boring, only a few were well designed and a lot were designed specifically for death-match play.

I'm currently testing out the WAD files, looking for some of the better ones that  i've played before, those will be a required download, as they will be setup for use with the server.

The remaining Wads will be shared too, for your own use and testing, and if anyone finds a WAD they think others will love, let me know, it can be added to the required downloaded wads.

Wooops, i counted my IWAD files, turns out i have collected over 700... i've never counted them before... i have so much testing to do.......

As a side note i've got 6 that work with doom2

The rest are designed for doom1 and or specific doom ports or dehaked versions, which may or may not be supported by the port i'm testing with... most of the info files that come with the pwads have been lost, they would have supplied info on the intended use for the wad file.

The server is back online.
But now using Zdaemon.

Zdaemon is very popular and has been around for years, also has tons of master server game listings, as you'll see.

You'll also need the WAD archive ONLY IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT ALREADY.

TIP:  You can select > copy & paste any image into your image viewer, or click and save,  this will allow viewing the original size images.

You can edit or add your IWAD & PWAD directory locations in the setup and or the client.


From the client select.

Then select & enter my IP and port as shown.

Now selecting either the [Server] or [Favorites] tab ( lower left corner ),
on the [Favorites] you should see "Tins Server" listed.
Click to highlight.
Then click the [Join] icon.

And away we go....

Zdaemon is designed specifically for multiplayer and supports up to 100 client connections. ( my server is limited to 15, 10 players, and 5 spectators ).

I also have one BOT configured, he will only join as a client filler if client spots are unfilled. ( be careful, the bot is tough, very tough to beat. The more human players the better cause the bot wont be focused only on you..

I have one PWAD added called purepak and 6 of it's 32 levels configured for use. This can be changed to add any level or list of custom levels in any order. You can play this purepak level in single player mode too, to checkout all the levels, plus any of the 700+ PWADS included in the WADS archive.

PWAD = edited custom doom levels that are applied as a MOD onto the basic IWAD level. ( which could be a minor edit to a complete level(s) replacement)

IWAD = the required game wads.

When you join, you arrive as a spectator, then pressing [SpaceBar] or [ E ] joins the game as a player if a spot is available.
While in spectator mode, you can free fly through out the current level and watch game play live till a spot becomes open should you want to join.

In game pressing [ESC] brings up the game menu where you should visit [options] & [KeyBindings] as needed to set your preferences, ( best done in-game before joining a deathmatch ) .

EDIT: In keybindings, press [BackSpace] to clear any set keybinding.

The clients do support in game chat and they do advertise a voice chat client.

I've made a few changes to the server setup, and a few usage tips..

Pressing [T] to send messages to everybody
                [G] for your private team chat. ( based on your player color )

Pressing [~] will open the "console" ,  [ESC] close's it.
Then type callvote map map14
     or callvote map map02
     or any map between 01 and 32 for example
Starts a vote that lasts 2 minutes, which needs at least 51% YES votes, to change to that map / level.
( I set my YES NO keybindings to use [PGUP] (YES) & [PGDN] (NO) for example.
( if the match timer runs out, you advance to the next level )
( If the match frag limit is reached, you advance to the next level )

There is a 1 minute timer that starts as soon as any player joins the game, all spectators/players must join the game before that 1 minute runs out, or you have to wait till the next level starts to join.

Currently there is a 10 minute level/map timer.
There is a 10 frag counter limit per match.
reaching any of these advances to the next level/map.

Other settings may have been changed too, like the server client list will now show what map level the players are currently playing ( you may need to refresh the list to update it).
The full 32 levels of the "purpak.wad" have been added for play play.

There are 10 font options for you in the game, under Options>Display options>Fonts, of those each can have one of 6 font's, and 1 to 8 size options. ( there are other display options too, like windowed, full-screen, display resolution, and more).
You can pretty much fully customize the look and feel of the game to your liking

If you see something you would like changed, let me know, there are lots of options that effect the way the doom game engine works. ( i cant guarantee every option can be adjusted ).

I'm quite fond of FFA DeathMatchs ( default ), but the engine does support CTF, CO-OP, Survival, KOTH, & a few others too.
These MODES cant be voted on, but instead need to be setup, as a server option when initialized.

Also this doom port supports voting to "Kick" players from the game, and "Banning" players from the server is also supported.

I just want to make a post for anyone that comes here and say that I've played one of these with @tinsoldier and oh my god it was so fun. The run speed is hilarious it goes so fast but it makes it so fun. There's this weapon as well that kills you in one shot it's it fun to do it to players but not fun to have it done to you


I encourage people to come play these old timey games and just have half an hour of action packed, run faster than a cheetah fun

Who's up for some doom deathmatchs ?

I'm thinking wednesday or thursday, round about 9am or 10am PT (  4pm or 5pm UTC/GMT ), the same times we play carbattle on the weekends.

Feel free to suggest other times and/or days, we'll work it out.

Post here if your available to join.. the server is and has been running 24/7, so be sure to setup ZDaemon  ( look back in this message thread if you need the files, there are 2 links, one for the zdaemon and one for the WAD files, you need both) .

Once you have zdaemon setup, you can join my private server or any of the other servers listed for some frag time, you're not limited to my server only.

There is also setup info there too. ( message here if you want setup help ).

Hmm...maybe ill try too. Nver played Doom. As far as i remember, my dad still has floppy discs of the game. (not sure)

Its weird because i never ever played Doom, but it was real good. It was a bit hard, because i didnt even know that you can actually look up and down. And the maps were complex but great!

Uhh...everything is in the first page you need. You just have to download this thing called "ZDaemon", set up an account, the find Tin's server, info about it is also on page 1! Really easy!

You need two downloads, zdaemon doom client/server and the wads zip file too.
Unzip the wads file to a non temp folder, and install zdaemon.

read back in this message thread for all the setup info and my IP required to find my private server.
