after using 3DRad for a while now i finally feel confident enough using this engine that i've started making a game thats not anymore just a simple collection of random levels put together like i used to do, but a cohesive open world adventure, with sidequests, a relevant story and a very diverse set of stuff to do

the game will be called Self Defence Situation, with it my intent is to recreate the feeling of free exploration you could perceive from early Zelda games, but in a new, more adult format

i'ts currently still in a very early stage of development so posting any playable gameplay yet would make little sense but here's a few screenshots to kinda give an idea of what SDS will look like

i'll mainly use this thread as a personal diary for every update and to look for advice from the community

also occasionally to ask for help since im a noob

day one of my super cool dev diary

-i took an old model from a big building i made a while ago and gave it a slight makeover, the externals are fine but working on the inside will be harder work, nothing impossible tho
-got rid of the jumping option, it was causing too many problems, plus it was not essential for the gameplay
-created a small key model
-created a couple of events on location as triggers for story progression
-fixed a merchant bug that would have me pay more than i meant to

not much going on today, maybe later i'll go work on the buildings model again

day two of the dopest dev diary in the crew

today i slept very little and i'll have to spend the rest of the day with gf, so i dont have much time to spend with the game but

-i made three simple polygonal models, one for an npc, one for a boss and one for a scenery element
-i added more collectibles to the game
-i did slight modifications to the building's interns

for various reasons i feel very nervous and can't work any further, not that i could do much with the little time i have left, hopefully tomorrow things will be better

You seem to be moving fast through the development of your game. That will mean more time to polish some rough edges , if any, near the end of development. Where are you drawing inspiration from?

@kulu i mean to publish my game on steam at around the 7th of may, so yeah i'll need to be very productive quick and even if i work alone i also have hired a couple of beta testers to help me find any bug once the production has stopped
weirdly enough, my main inspiration for self defence situation is toby fox, even if our projects are completely different, but i really appreciate his hustle
the archer show is another big contribution due to its very crude humor, but overall as i said in the op i wanna do something similar to zelda

That looks nice, and I know this is a very minor thing, but thank you for putting a few screenshots on the post! It's great for me to see what's up and entice me to download it and play when its up.

day six in the yappiest and friendliest game dev diary that has ever graced this dark world

ok well, not much happening today either to be fair, i'm meeting quite a few roadblocks plus lack of time, but i'm trying

-created a couple of new models for a new area
-gave the final improvements to the first floor of my main building
-created an npc
-added a new path block and its solution
-few fixes here and there

i'm severely lacking sleep due to bad decision making

@kulu well to be fair the daily amout of work i put on SDS is barely tirying, its just that now that i'm a wagecuck its harder to find time for the game
yesterday for example i could do nothing, today i'll try to arrange something here and there

and besides, i'm afraid i hit a road block due to not understanding how to teleport entities

-i applied the anti aliasing trick explained on the pinned post of this board now that i have a new graphic card
-i created a boss battle model
-i started working on the logistics of said boss battle

i have become optimistic again about the future of this game and its thanks to the fine people from here who are helping

EDIT: i changed the name of one of the scripts (without any firther edit) and now the error is just gone? well alright

after that i'll do something else

oh, and i'd like to add

the reason the project is on a short hiatus, in case anyone was wondering, starts with Kingdom Hearts and ends with 3

kingdom hearts 3 has been completed and after that, once wiped my manly tears, the ninth day of the heartiest dev diary of the kingdom can finally begin!

-the engine is starting to get a bit laggy, even with anti aliasing deactivated eeee its still workable and the compiled project works just fine so no biggie
-i have fucking imported a sketchup model into 3drad without saving it first and now i realized i left out the freaking default sprite in, its very simple and didnt take me that much to make but man what a pain
-sometimes the 1stperson chara gets stuck in walls, i'll have to play around with collisions in the rigidbodies to see if i can fix that
-despite these problems pretty much 40-50% of the game is now done and the latest stuff should be generally easier to handle

ladies and gentlemen, i introduce to you the tenth day of the long running award winning dev diary presented by the nuska himself

3drad has this weird bug where if you rename a script it doesnt show you its error anymore until you restart, for some reason
luckily the errors were nothing important
i have almost completed the first two thirds of the game, and tomorrow i'll design one of the 3 boss battles, dialogues, gameplay and all of it, which is what's really the last thing i have left to do until i focus on the final segment
i already have a few ideas but nothing definitive so far

plus other boring stuff
problems, problems...
